The best init string, is usually the most basic one.
Mine is ATW2&D2&C1&Q5S11=50S7=90
Many of these are defaults, but somtimes it helps to tell the modem
exactly what you want! <g>

James,
Well, yes, you could say that Bob had trouble with the Bocas here on
Exec-PC. They're not a very good modem for taking lots of incoming calls
from a variety of other modems. However, they're an excellent modem for
outgoing calls. I believe Bob still has a Boca in the PC on his desk for
all his outgoing stuff.
I've got one and have no problems using it with Procomm+ for Windows on a
'386-25 with 8M of RAM. I regularly get 1650+ cps upload and download
rates with Zmodem.
That is of course for .GIF and .ZIP files...
For uncompressed text file transfers (big_one.asc and big_one.nul), you're
almost assuredly going to have problems with the Boca unless its in a very
fast PC. Steve Booth has his in a '486 screamer and doesn't have problems.
I have problems with uncompressed text file transfers due to the lack of a
16550Axx UART. However, I don't care 'cause I never do uncompressed text
file transfers (except to test big_one...)
If uncompressed text transfers are important to you or if you plan to do
transfers in the background with HEAVY forground stuff going on, you
probably want to stick with a modem that has a 16550Axx UART.
FWIW, someone's selling two Bocas in the want ads/computer used topic for
$180 each...I saw the ad this morning. That's a pretty good price if the
Boca will do what you need it to do.

Yes, bob had some problems with his Boca modems, and others have also,
although the "newest" generation seems to be much better.
However, for the price difference, you can get a GREAT modem.
I currently sell the Twincom V.32bis/14,400bps Fax for $250.00.
It has a 16550 UART on board (internal model).

Yes, he did. So did most everyone else. As I understand it, the quality
and function has improved considerably, but not enough to allow me to
recommend one.
However, the Infotel 144I, available for about the same money, works fine.
I have one here that I'm testing and once I got things set properly it
just works and works. It is essentially the same modem that Bob has online
on the Twincom lines.

That is essentially correct. The only problem is, that Twincom will NOT
support an Infotel modem. So any ROM upgrades, etc., will have to be done
through Infotel. When I was talking to Twincom about this, he basically
washed his hands clean of the Infotel brand...doesn't even want to hear
about them. I wonder if they are sorry they are OEM'ing them?
In any case, I'll stick with support direct from the maker of the modem.

You should be able to get lots better than that... I routinely get 1650+
cps upload or download on .ZIP and .GIF files using Procomm+ for Windows
(running in Windows of course) through a Boca modem in my '386-25. If your
configuration is simiar or better, you should be abe to get at least what
I get. The ASCII files should come accross at over 4000cps if you've got a
buffered UART (16550Axx). I get somewhere in the 2000-2500cps range with
the Boca.

You may have missed it, but Steve stated that he didn't have a hard drive.
I'm willing to bet that his slower transfer speeds are due to downloading
to diskette. Doing a DL to diskette will be considerably slower than
going to a HD.

Your best choice, IMO, is the Twincom 144DFi. It has an on board
16550 UART, and is very configurable. They are used for several high
speed lines right here on EXEC-PC.
Of course, I am biased, because I also sell them, but you can ask anybody
here about the quality of the Twincom...I doubt you will get ANY bad
comments. They work GREAT!

I heartily recommend the U.S. Robotics Sportster 14.4 internal.
I bought one of these back in October to replace my old ATI 2400 (I
couldn't resist the lure of V.32bis any longer). I got mine from Computer
Discount Warehouse for $279 (like you I didn't need fax capabilities).
The USR is a three-quarter length card, it took a little tweaking at first
to get it up and running right, and has given me near perfect service. I
never seem to have any connection problems to speak of (it seems to get
along as well with the Twincomms here on EXEC as it does with the USR's),
and I get consistant downloads of 1600-1650cps with Zmodem and even better
transfer rates with Y-Modem G.

Steve, I decided to day to try a different modem with Winfax Pro 3. So I
went out to Sam's and bought a complete pc turbomodem plus. It supports
14.4 data and 9600 class 1 & 2 fax modem standards. Since then I have
received over 100 pages from IBM Faxback as well as nearly 100 pages from
other trouble spot faxbacks with no errors whatsoever. So the problem is
most defintely the Supra hardware as I have changed nothing on my system.
This is my 4th AND LAST SUpra modem. Monday I will call and see if I can
get Supra to cough up my money and will look elsewhere. This turbomodem
works great but lacks a few of the conig options that I like. What are you
using ?
I'm going to call IBM tonight before I go to bed and load em up just
to double check but I expect it will work fine.

My reply is probably stale news, but I have an Infotel 14400 I got for
$200 that is fine. I get the very high transfer speeds mentioned by
others. Only thing I have noticed is a a temperature sensitivity, but I
don't know if that's the Infotel. This just requires a starting ambient
above about 72F or waiting a couple minutes for something to warm up.
If anybody else reads this, I'd be interested in hearing of any similar
temperature situation.

Subj: NEW MODEM
People have asked about recommendations for new Modems they intend to buy,
and others have commented on a lot of problems with "garbage" on the
screen (hi-ASCII no doubt) and low transfer rates.
I have had experience with all these things and have found three causes:
a.) You do not have a 16550 buffered UART capable of handling high speed
transmission without overruns.
b.) Your software is not making use of the buffering capability if you do
have a 16550.
c.) You have compression, either MNP or V.whatever, turned on when the
Modem you're calling is not able to handle it.
A.) If you do not have a 16550, I feel sorry for you, but I guess you just
have to slow things down, as I've seen recommended to a number of people
here. IN BUYING A NEW MODEM I'd say if you want speed make da__ed sure it
has a 16550 (Infotel, Twincom, many fine other ones).
B.) Make sure your software is actually using the buffering. I found on my
old Everfax that I had an incorrect initialization string and was not
using its 16550 buffering. BIG DIFFERENCE afterwards.
C.) A lot of gobbledygook when you connect might be due to
incompatibilities in compression. Use a prefix string for a particular
number to turn MNP & v.whatever compression ON or OFF as approriate. It
has made all that stuff disappear for me.

Greg: I have an Intel 400 internal. According to the docs, and according
to Intel, there is NOT a 16550 UART on the board. If you look at the
board, you will not find the chip, either. The 16550 UART has a 16 byte
buffer, but the 80C186 coprocessor on the 400 has a 16K buffer, 1000
larger than the 16550 UART buffer! The 400 imulates a 16450. In many
ways this makes the Intel far superior to modems with a 16550 UART.

Keith (and Jason, too),
One of the nicest things about my Supra is its small size. It fits right
on top of my PC case, next to the monitor, and doesn't waste any desktop
space. I also do like the easy-to-read LED display, better in my computer
room than those LCD displays on some other modems. It may not be perfect
(I occasionally have trouble connecting here, need to call 3-4 times to
get connected), but I'm sure I've gotten my $$$$ worth out of it! I bought
one of the first ones back last April (ordered in Feb `92), and it sure
has saved money on long distance charges, and its allowed me to spend time
on messaging, which I didn't have time for earlier.

If you change to a 14.4 modem and have one at the other end you can get
download speeds of 1600 to 1700+ CPS instead of the 230 you are used to
now, that is on ZIP files. On Text files it can go way over 3000cps. I

I have had experiance with the SUPRA FAX\MODEM 14.4k. It is a great
modem. I didn't read the manuals corrrectly at first so I had some
problems but they were cleared up when I read the manuals. They offer
great support. They just sent *ALL* their customers new ROM upgrades for
free or for $19.95 you can get caller ID with the modem. IT comes with a
neat little 2 digit display that tells what is going on i.e baud rate
(14.4, 9600, 2400) and if it is using compression and the such. I have had
1670 cps here on exec connecting with the USR's and 1700 with the
Twincom's. Alll in all it is one good modem. You can get it for about $279
for the external and like 240 for the internal I think from Computability
here in Milwaukeee.

I love the Supra.. I have always been a big supporter for them, however
the new 14.4K FaxModem runs real hot and is not recommended for BBSes
unless you either take off the pace plate or take it out of it's casing to
keep it cool... it'll work fine, but at such high temps, it's bound to
wear out the life of it. Me however for my BBS, I drilled tiny holes on
the top of it and a couple on the bottowm with a wafer thin 12VDC
brushless fan on top to keep it nice and cool... (ATTEN! if you don't know
electronics, don't try this!)
All in all I think their's is one of the most universally connectable
modems, and like others have said before, they are GREAT in supporting
their users/buyers...
Oh and BTW, drilling holes in the casing voids warrenty.... I'm taking my
chances...

I know of at least 4 or 5 others that have this modem, and none of them
have had a problem with it since the 1.15m ROM revision. The best feature
that the modem has is the automatic speed shifting, I don't know the
marketing term for it! Basically, on a 14.4 connection, for example, if
the modems see alot of line noise, they will negotiate a 12.0 connection,
(I've had it go as far as 9600 already), and then if (& when) then lines
improve, they will renotiate a higher rate. This means that you will
always get the fastest connection possible, given the conditions. If this
is important to you, make sure that the modem you buy has that capability.
Oh yeah, the LCD display, along with the standard LED status lights, on
the external model is really nice. When I was troubleshooting connections
last summer, nothing beat being able to see compression modes, connect
rates, fax status, etc.
Since PPI is owned by Hayes, I think that the company will be around a
long time to honor the lifetime guarantee they offer, should you ever need
it.
Sorry for sounding like a PPI salesman, but you asked for opinions!!

Dave,
Your best source for asking about compatibility problems is right here, if
you have a certain one in mind, ask if anyone has had any problems with
that particular modem.
If you're looking to the future and want some sort of guarantee, US
Robotics has a program right now that says something to the effect that if
you buy a USR Courier 14.4 now, they will upgrade that modem to the V.Fast
standard, if/when it gets approved, for $300 or $399. Food for thought.
If you haven't made up your mind yet, I have a PPI 14400FXSA and I am very
happy with it. I have linked up with USR, PPI, Twincom, Intel, Supra
and Boca without any problems. The fastest throughput I've ever seen was
with BIGONE.ASC in the free section, I reached 5333cps! Now, keep in mind
that this file is VERY compressible, therefore for testing maximum
throughput given environment, compression, etc. I typically reach 1630cps
on GIFs and ZIP files. I almost never download unzipped text files, so I
don't know average rates for them (they're always different anyway).
Good luck with your search, but remember, once you've had a taste of
14.4, you'll never want to touch 2400 again!

Not a PPI Salesman either, but I have 6 14400FXSA's in service at work and
they are outstanding!! If you've got the cash I would recommend them over
any other modem I know. Works great since the 1.15 ROM fix, talks to every
Fax I've tried, rock solid to all modems I call too.

Possibly the best low cost V.32bis modem on the market is the Twincom.
I sell them and have had excellent sucess with them. I'm sure you can ask
any of the users in this conference, and they will tell you their good
luck with them...
